To add support for the new Microsoft 2007 .docx format in Microsoft 2003, simply download and install the Microsoft Compatibility Pack. With this package installed, not only can you open 2007 formats with 2003, but you can also use the packages conversion tool to convert documents from .docx to regular .doc. I’ve only tested this on XP Pro with Microsoft 2003. I’m not sure if it will work with older versions such as 2000.
