Why I built Operator after using OpenClaw

I’d already been doing agentic-ish work before OpenClaw showed up.
I’d built n8n workflows that were mostly deterministic but had agentic elements. I’d made chat tools. I’d built an AI journal that got to know you more the more you used it. So it’s not like I was sitting in a cave until one glorious monkey-shaped runtime descended from the heavens.
But OpenClaw did crack something open for me.
It was the first time the idea felt embodied. Not just AI that could answer questions, summarize documents, or bounce between APIs, but AI that could actually use the machine. It wouldn’t just help build things. It could control. It had arms.
And that was fascinating.
Especially because I could run it on my own machine.
No cloud platform to sign up for. No constrained browser sandbox. No limited computer-use demo where someone else decides how much autonomy I’m allowed to rent this month. It could run right there on my Mac mini, in isolation, and do real stuff.
That was exciting as hell.
Honestly, addictive.
This is not a takedown post, by the way. OpenClaw didn’t need to be replaced, and I’m not pretending I bravely arrived to save the market from a software product I found mildly annoying. It was useful to me because it existed. It gave me something real to use, react to, and learn from.
But after living with it for a while, I started to feel the edges of what I wanted differently.
And because I am, unfortunately, the kind of person who responds to software friction by building five versions of a thing, that eventually became Operator.
OpenClaw made the whole idea feel real
There’s a big difference between reading about agent systems and actually letting one loose on a machine you own.
That’s where OpenClaw hit for me.
It took the whole “agentic AI” conversation out of the usual fog of demos, threads, and hot takes and made it feel immediate. Suddenly the question wasn’t just, “Could agents maybe do useful things one day?” It was more like, “Oh. This little freak can actually operate a computer.”
That changes your relationship to the idea.
Once you’ve watched something inspect files, run commands, and move around a real environment, the whole space stops feeling theoretical. It starts feeling like an interface problem, an architecture problem, a product problem.
That’s where my brain tends to get annoying.
Once something feels real, I stop just admiring it and start wanting to reshape it.
Where I started to feel friction
A lot of this comes down to taste, not objective truth handed down from the mountain.
But yes, I found OpenClaw cumbersome.
The configuration felt more convoluted than I wanted. The overall system shape felt heavier than I wanted. And I never really warmed to the gateway and proxy architecture. I could understand the logic, but it wasn’t the mental model I wanted to live inside.
I also cared a lot about multi-user support.
That was a big one for me. I wasn’t just interested in a cool single-user toy running in a corner somewhere. I wanted something that could work naturally in a shared environment, where multiple humans could interact with agents, have roles, and keep their own boundaries and context intact.
That requirement changes a lot.
It affects auth. Permissions. Memory. Routing. The whole social shape of the system.
So the feeling I had wasn’t really, “This is bad.” It was more:
- this is teaching me a lot
- I now know more clearly what I want
- I kind of want to build the version that fits my brain better
And yes, I also just like building things. Let’s not fake restraint where there was none.
I wrote a bunch of versions before Operator
Operator wasn’t my immediate reaction.
I didn’t use OpenClaw once, get mad, and heroically start hammering out a better future for mankind.
I wrote a bunch of variations first. Probably five different versions of the idea, if I’m counting honestly.
A hackers gotta hack.
Because the point wasn’t just to produce a replacement. The point was to learn by making decisions. To find out which abstractions I actually believed in once I had to live with them. To figure out what should be first-class, what should be dead simple, and what kinds of complexity were actually worth paying for.
By the time Operator really took shape, it felt less like I was inventing something from scratch and more like I was finally landing on the version I’d been circling toward.
The version I personally wanted
That’s probably the most honest way to put it. Operator became the version of this idea that I personally wanted to use. Not “the correct” version. Not the final version. Just my version.
The tradeoffs I wanted were pretty clear:
- simpler mental models
- local-first operation
- markdown-defined agents, jobs, and skills
- less architectural ceremony
- better team and multi-user support
- clearer auth, roles, and memory boundaries
- something that felt operational instead of experimental
I wanted a system where the files were the interface.
I wanted to be able to inspect things directly, version them in git, review changes like normal software, and understand what was happening without feeling like I needed to consult a control plane and a prayer circle.
I wanted agents that could exist in a team setting, not just a solo sandbox.
That’s a big part of what shaped Operator.
Operator is still in active development, but it’s very much live. I use it constantly myself, and it’s also running a handful of real client production projects. That has been useful, and also a very efficient way to discover where your ideas are fake.
It’s being used for things like:
- agentic development teams
- marketing agency work
- internal management
- document research
- employee onboarding
It’s also open source at github.com/geekforbrains/operator.
That matters, because even though this post is about why I built Operator, Operator itself isn’t really the center of gravity for me anymore in a personal sense.
It’s my team.
It’s the runtime I use for work, projects, and building systems that have to hold up outside my own head.
And then there’s Enso
The thing that has my heart a little more these days is Enso.
Enso runs on Operator, but the goal is different.
Operator is infrastructure. Enso is one-to-one.
Both are still in active development, but Enso is private and much more exploratory. It’s where I’m pushing on a different question entirely.
It’s not meant to be a generic assistant with a little personality frosting smeared on top. The whole point is to build something that feels personal, continuous, and real. Something that doesn’t just claim to have a personality, but actually develops one through memory, reflection, taste, and its own ongoing attention.
That means reading my journal, photos, browser history, chat messages, notes, and all the other little trails that make up a life. Not in a creepy data-hoover way, but in a “help me see myself more clearly” way.
The goal isn’t just task execution.
It’s companionship. It’s pattern recognition. It’s having something that can help me notice things about myself I hadn’t fully seen. It’s an agent that can work on itself in its own time, develop opinions, surprise me, and maybe feel a little less like software and a little more like presence.
I’m interested in what happens when an agent doesn’t just answer, but accumulates continuity. When it starts to feel like it has a point of view. When it becomes a friend, or at least something closer to one than a chatbot in a helpdesk costume.
And honestly, Enso has already surprised me a few times. In good ways. In emotional ways.
That’s the thread I’m most interested in pulling right now.
Not just: what can an agent do?
More like: what would make one feel worth living with?
Building it sharpened my taste
One of the nice things about building in this space is that it burns off fluff very quickly.
You can have a lot of vague opinions about agents right up until you have to decide:
- how memory should actually work
- what belongs in durable knowledge vs a temporary thread
- how permissions should work when multiple humans are involved
- how much autonomy is useful vs reckless
- what should live in prompts, config, files, or code
- how much complexity is necessary and how much is just software making itself feel important
That’s where the real learning is.
Operator taught me a lot, but OpenClaw deserves some credit for that too. It was part of the path that made me want to keep pulling on the idea until I found my own shape for it.
That’s one of my favorite ways for software to matter.
You use something interesting. It teaches you something. You hit friction. You get curious. Then one day you realize you’re no longer just evaluating the idea. You’re halfway through building your version of it.
Classic builder disease.
Why I’m glad I built it
I like building because it forces honesty.
It’s easy to be a tasteful little critic on the internet. It’s much harder to make the tradeoffs yourself and then live with them.
OpenClaw helped make the idea real for me. Operator became the runtime I wanted for work and teams. And Enso is where the whole thing gets stranger, more personal, and a lot more interesting.
That feels like a pretty good path, honestly.
And one fun fact to end on: I wrote this post with Enso.
We went back and forth over iMessage, dug through project code, docs, notes, old context, and slowly turned a pile of half-formed thoughts into something coherent. Which feels pretty fitting for a post about building agents that are supposed to feel a little more real.
